And that I am able to send my memory on archaeological digs. At first I was rather disappointed about how little I remembered but then I discovered that memory is not only shrunken, it's lazy. When I prodded it into life (eg, via the brief reference to supermarkets) more detail became available - notably how Dickensian the interiors of grocery shops still were: brass scales, drawers with enamelled metal name tags, employees wearing white overalls and white aprons, a mixture of smells dominated, it seemed, by cinnamon.

RW (zS)/Marly: Romantic and lovely, yes.
