A condign end?

Yes, I felt a huge gush of relief but I'm a retired hack. Was there something else that might be said?

I reflected on all the traditions and gentlemen's agreements Orange Man has ignored or broken (refusing to release his accounts, hurrying through the the supreme court appointment, using the White House for his campaigns, etc, etc).

Well there's another tradition coming up: OM being allowed to loll in the White House for another ten weeks. Why not send in a couple of cops with instructions to show him the back door and to hand over a pre-paid voucher for some hotel out on the Beltway?

With this explanation. Biden urgently needs the space to meet his number one priority: creating the beginnings of an active solution to Covid. The country cannot afford to wait ten weeks on this; another hundred-thousand citizens could die in the interim. By going quietly Trump would be making his own - admittedly reluctant - contribution to preventing this needless waste of life.

Nothing in his life, it was said, became him so much as his departure from it. Thanks Will.

  1. There were reports of spontaneous dancing in the downtown square where I live. I missed it, being out running errands a couple of miles away at the time. However, another celebration in January is being planned which many more of us will attend.

There is much joy in Mudville right now; joy and hope...and deep relief.

    1. The Crow: Yeah, I could have danced. I like the expressiveness but I'm no good at it. Instead I slipped into my old professional mode - as if the election were a story I'd been covering. Excitement would be a given and I looked elsewhere for what we hacks call "an angle". The suggestion I made is probably impossible; for all I know the ten weeks may be written into the Constitution. But I write fiction and it frees me up to be inventive. I wanted an aftermath that was "condign".

  2. I've started my countdown to the day he leaves. Seventy-three days between now and January 20th. I like your idea of making him get out of the White House. Too bad that won't happen. Let's just hope he doesn't do too much damage in the interim. We're still happy dancing about the results. We won!!!

    1. robin andrea: I agree. What is he capable of during that phasing-out period? Declaring war with China?

  3. I'm waiting for the backlash here in the States. It will come. Some people will die, some will get hurt, some will get arrested. And then we'll move on. Sigh.

    1. Colette: Well, I hope we are able to move on. Truly.

My feeling is that Trump has a sharp - if self-centred - political brain and these baseless lawsuits are part of a four-year plan. They will drag on interminably, not with any expectation that they will be successful, but that they will embed in his supporters' memories the belief that he was cheated in this election and that this will be to his advantage when he stands again in 2024.

Biden is facing some difficult long-term problems in rectifying Trump's damage and it's unlikely that everything will work out well before he faces re-election. He'll be vulnerable. I doubt he'll stand and Kamala will inherit this dog's dinner. Best of luck to her.

And, all of a sudden, 2024 seems like tomorrow week.

  4. Well, if he'd been ousted after being Impeached we could have avoided all of this and moved forward quicker...

  5. What a relief! It has been exhausting – physically exhausting for me as well because I had to drive twice to Georgia from Nashville to vote (1000 miles total.) But I don’t mind and am so pleased that Georgia turned blue. Now I have to drive back to Atlanta in mid December for early voting for the senate run-off. The Senate needs to be blue too or they will stop Biden from accomplishing much. Of course not all Georgians are happy – mostly those from little towns. One of them came to my last post and wrote a nasty comment (and I could not stop my daughter from responding.)

But you know if they only listen to Fox News and believe what they hear it’s understandable that they thought there was fraud, these right-wing reporters are really good at giving false information. I remember once listing to the French President on Fox News and they were translating everything he said wrong, on purpose. Then I found out that Fox News is not a licensed as “news” channel but as an “entertainment” channel and thus has to feed their viewers’ bigotry and racism.

  6. Vagabonde: One encouraging development is that the Fox (unlike the leopard) has changed its spots and latterly has refused to support some of Trump's more grotesque claims. To the point where Trump thinks he's been betrayed - regarding Fox as simply his troupe of cheerleaders.

If Fox is an "entertainment" channel they've grievously failed with me.
